Classic Marinara Sauce in a Slow Cooker

This recipe is a classic marinara sauce. We decided to make it in our slow cooker. We had so much going on, we just had to set it and forget it.  We also made our classic meatballs and fusilli to make this a yummy duckinapot Wednesday lunch.

MARINARA SAUCE
Ingredients:
oregano – 3½ teaspoons
sweet basil – 1 teaspoon
bay leaf – 1
black pepper – ½ teaspoon
salt – ½ teaspoon
garlic powder – ½ teaspoon
garlic cloves – 3 minced
olive oil – for frying
yellow onion – 1
sugar – 2 teaspoons
tomato sauce – (2) 28-ounce cans
tomato paste – (1) 12-ounce can
diced tomatoes – (2) 16-ounce cans
red wine – 1/3 cup

Preparation
Chop 1 sweet yellow onion
Mince 3 cloves of garlic
Open all your cans
Get your seasonings ready

Prepare the Sauce
Put enough olive oil in a sauté the pan to just barely cover the bottom.
Turn on the heat to medium.
Add 1 finely chopped yellow onion and sauté for 5 minutes.
Add 3 minced garlic cloves and continue to sauté for 2 minutes.
Add the onions and garlic to the slow cooker

Now add the rest to the slow cooker on high
Add (2) 16-ounce cans of diced tomatoes.
Fill (1) of the 16 ounce cans with water about ½ full and add to the slow cooker
Add a 12-ounce can of tomato paste.
Fill the 12-ounce tomato paste can with water and add to the slow cooker
Add (2) 28-ounce cans of tomato sauce.
Fill (1) of the 28-ounce cans up with water about 1/2 full, then add to the slow cooker

Add:
1/3 cup red wine
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
3 ½ teaspoons oregano
1 teaspoon sweet basil
½ teaspoon garlic powder
1 bay leaf
2 teaspoons sugar

Slow cook for about 5 hours
